It’s official! I am a Ph.D. candidate. My proposal defense went reasonably well, I suppose. I only felt like an idiot once or twice during questioning. Even though, I passed, and that is what matters. Now the “only” thing left to do is finish my research and write a thesis. I didn’t do much else this past week besides prepare for the defense. It feels strange to have that hurdle out of the way.

Last weekend I was supposed to run in the Frostbite half-marathon; however, because of weather conditions, I didn’t make it to the race. I had every intention of running the race. I got up and ate the food I usually eat before running and started out toward the state park where the race was held. Then, my downfall… I thought the ice on the road wouldn’t be a big problem, but as I got farther and farther from the city, the roads got worse. My turning point was when I started sliding uncontrollably toward the truck in front of me. You would think they would have salted the interstates. Anyway, I decided it best to turn around after that. I was even convinced myself they probably wouldn’t even hold the race in conditions like that. The race was, of course, held, and I missed out. Oh well… What kind of crazy person runs on ice anyway? I ended up running my prescribed 16 miles on the treadmill. Talk about boring…

Anyhow, it it my intention this weekend to start brewing another batch of beer. A plain old ale, hopefully along the lines of Bass in flavor… And this time, maybe my clean up will be a bit simpler. I think I might also try my hand at homemade granola bars.

Just thought I would brag a bit about my sushi… And try to post a photo, which didn’t work the last time I tried it… The ingredients that go into it are relatively inexpensive. The cute little dipping bowls are not so cheap though. I will be trying this again. Next time with more exotic ingredients… I’m thinking sweet potato and maybe something crunchy.

Hmmm… Valentine’s Day… I don’t suppose it will be very eventful. Brad’s grandfather is being buried today. Not a very romantic notion… I am planning on making homemade sushi for dinner tonight when he gets back. That’s the extent of my plans for the evening. I wanted to go to the Katy K’s burlesque show, but I don’t think he will be in the mood for that. Maybe we can do that later.

Think a burlesque show is wrong? If I could dance well, I would want to be a burlesque dancer. Kind of reminds me of the old-fashioned pinup girls… I could see the side of the argument stating the girls are on display, but for the most part, I believe they do it for themself. At least I would be… And they are never completely nude… Well, if you count pasties… Now, how to break into the burlesque dancing career? Burlesque dancer by night, pastry chef by day, and scientist… well, never…

I’ve got a new place to live! Brad and I signed the lease last Saturday on this cute little mother-in-law house a half mile from school. It isn’t the greatest place in the world, but I am so excited that I will be able to walk everywhere. It is right next to Hillsboro village, so I can walk to the coffee shop, the grocery store, the post office and, of course, school. We will also have a fenced in back yard complete with two other dogs belonging to the landlady who lives in the actual house. That should make Bear happy too. I can’t wait to move! The neighbors that live below me now yell at each other all the time. The way they treat each other is depressing. Yay, new house!

Also this weekend, I ran my first race of the year. A 10 miler out in Goodletsville… We turned in a 1:39 time. Not too bad in my opinion, given that it was snowing on us…

In sadder news, I took my roommate, Cary, to the airport this morning. She left for Washington, D.C. and is then off to El Salvador. Hopefully, I will be able to visit in a year or so. What other time am I going to have a reason to travel to El Salvador?
